You’re on the move — literally.
The game opens with you in the back of a moving van. You and your mom have just moved to Hoenn, a brand new region across the seas from Kanto and Johto. Your new home is Littleroot Town.
Littleroot Town Tasks
At this point in the game, it’s all introductions and preparing for the journey ahead!
1. Setting the clock and speaking with your mom
After hopping out of your moving van, walk inside your house and take the staircase to your room. There’ll be a clock on the wall and you’ll want to set the time.
You’ll want to head downstairs and speak with your mom after exploring your bedroom. After a short conversation about your father, she’ll suggest meeting your neighbor, Prof. Birch.
2. Meet the Birch family
The first thing you’ll want to do is heed your mom’s advice! Prof. Birch’s home is the house directly left or right of your home. (Right, if you’re playing as a boy; left, if you’re playing as a girl).
Once arriving at Birch’s home, you’ll learn that he isn’t there! However, his wife will greet you and invite you to meet their son or daughter upstairs. Depending on whether you’re playing as a boy or girl, the Birch child will be a girl or boy, respectively. Their name will be either May or Brendan.
3. Find Prof. Birch
After making friends with May or Brendan, exit the house and head South for Prof. Birch’s lab.
Once again, Prof. Birch isn’t in the lab. Speak to his assistant, who will tell you to visit Route 101.
Route 101 is Northward. It won’t be long until you run into Prof. Birch, who’s run into some trouble. He’ll be cornered by a wild Poochyena and ask you to grab a Pokémon from his bag.
4. Choose your Starter Pokémon!
Run to Prof. Birch’s bag. You’ll find three Poké Balls inside, each with a different Pokémon: Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip.
Which Starter Should I Choose in Ruby and Sapphire?
When it comes to Ruby and Sapphire’s starter Pokémon, it doesn’t really matter which you choose. Each comes with its own sets of strengths and weaknesses. Most will select the Pokémon they like best.
Click through the tabs to learn more about each of the options!
Treecko is a Grass-type Pokémon!
- Strong Against: Water-, Rock-, and Ground-type Pokémon.
- Weak Against: Bug-, Fire-, Flying-, Poison-, and Ice-type Pokémon.
Torchic is a Fire-type Pokémon!
- Strong Against: Grass-, Ice-, Bug-, and Steel-type Pokémon.
- Weak Against: Water-, Rock-, and Ground-type Pokémon.
Mudkip is a Water-Type Pokémon!
- Strong Against: Fire-, Ground-, and Rock-type Pokémon.
- Weak Against: Grass- and Electric-type Pokémon.
Choose one of the Pokémon — but choose wisely. This will be your first Pokémon and there won’t be an opportunity to catch the other two you leave behind later in the game.
5. Battle Poochyena and save Prof. Birch
Once you’ve chosen your Pokémon, you’ll enter into battle with Poochyena. Use your base attack (tackle or scratch) to defeat your first Pokémon.
6. Return to the lab
You and Prof. Birch will return to the lab after you defeat Poochyena. He gifts you the Pokémon you used in the battle and asks you to meet up with May or Brendan on Route 103.
